Ranking the Top 100 MLS Players of the Last 10 Years: 71. Jonathan Osorio

Ever since Jonathan Osorio arrived at Toronto FC in 2013, he has been one of Major League Soccer's most consistent players. The Canadian midfielder began his career with SC Toronto of the Canadian Soccer League in 2012, quickly receiving an invite from the TFC Academy. He earned a contract in preseason, then debuted on March 9th, 2013, substituting into the match for the current interim manager of the club, Terry Dunfield. He scored his first goal off the bench on March 30th, eventually becoming a regular starter for the next decade. Osorio also made his first appearance for the Canadian National Team in 2013, he now has 68 caps and 9 goals for his country.

Osorio scored his first goal of this series' time frame against Houston Dynamo in July of 2014, staying alert on a goalkeeping blunder. He added a consolation goal in the penultimate game of the season versus RBNY. Toronto finished seventh, which was well short of the playoffs at the time. In 2015, Osorio's goal scoring dropped from 3 goals down to one, but he offset it with his career-high in assists, with 7. His lone goal came on the first day of August, in a 3-1 loss against New England, though at least the finish was tidy. Six teams made the playoffs in the 2015 season, which allowed TFC to qualify in the final spot. Montreal got the best of them, though, winning 3-0 in the first round.

In 2016, Osorio added 2 more goals and 5 more assists to his career totals. In 2016, Osorio aided Toronto FC in winning the Canadian Championship. He scored a brace in a massive 4-2 win over the Montreal Impact. Both of his goals on the season came late in the campaign against the Chicago Fire, in separate matches. The September goal was a match-winner, the October goal, a match-winner of pure technical ability. Toronto made the playoffs as the third seed. Osorio scored against Philadelphia in the play-in match, advancing TFC to the next round. They defeated NYCFC, then Montreal. In MLS Cup, Toronto held Seattle scoreless, but fell 5-4 in penalties in a heartbreaking loss. But, they would be back for revenge.

In 2017, it was another pair of goals for Osorio along with 4 assists. It was the one year in which he took on less of a role in the squad, as Victor Vazquez stole some of his work. Oso's two goals on the season: a tidy finish versus Columbus and a surging solo goal against San Jose. This time around, Toronto FC claimed the Supporters' Shield. They ran through the Red Bulls and Crew en route to MLS Cup. TFC broke the SS curse, as they exacted the aforementioned revenge on Seattle in the final, 2-0. Osorio played 85. Toronto won the Canadian Championship for the second year in a row.

In 2018, Jonathan Osorio took over in what was undoubtedly his best ever season. He could not be stopped in the CONCACAF Champions League and MLS play. He notched a goal in both of the first two CCL series, in Colorado and a beautiful flick back home against Tigres. Then, he scored in the last two Toronto CCL series. In the semis against Club America for an always difficult away goal In Mexico, as well as a final goal against Chivas. Toronto would go on to lose 4-2 in penalties after a 3-3 aggregate draw. Osorio of course made the CCL Best XI and won the Golden Boot for the tournament. On June 8th, Osorio bagged his first MLS brace. The first came early on, while the second capped things off late in the match. Toronto won a third consecutive Canadian Championship as well. In classic MLS fashion, despite all this success elsewhere, Toronto missed the playoffs by quite a margin.

In 2019, the same consistency continued for Oso, scoring 5 and assisting a pretty usual 4 for his standards. TFC returned to the playoffs as a fourth seed. In a 5-1 win over DC United in extra time, Osorio scored two of said extra time goals, both in the first half of ET. Toronto made a run all the way back to a cup match with Seattle, but they lost in the third edition of the matchup. In the strange season of 2020, Osorio scored once. Toronto made the playoffs, but Nashville SC made the first round upset happen.

To begin 2021, Osorio scored in the first MLS and CCL match of the year. His opening MLS goal against Vancouver was quite the chaotic finish. He ended up with another decent 4 goal and 2 assist season. This year was the beginning of Toronto's downfall, as Osorio may have seen the last of the playoffs in his career. In 2022, it was more of the same 13th place in the East action for TFC. Though, Osorio had his second-best season behind 2018. He scored 9 goals and assisted 6 in a resurgent type of season. On August 6th, he scored the double against Nashville SC, showcasing some fancy footwork, then sliding one home later on.

Here in 2023, it was actually one of the weaker goal-scoring season for Osorio, until the time of writing. Literally while this article was being drafted, Osorio scored a brace for Toronto FC in tonight's/last night's match against FC Cincinnati. For a guy that has played this long, Oso has barely seen injuries. This season, he missed the most games at once, missing 10 games. With a 2-0 lead and a chance to clinch the Supporters' Shield, FC Cincinnati allowed two scrappy goals to occur for the main man. In true 2023 Toronto fashion, FCC still got the job done and won the Shield, while the already eliminated TFC lost their 17th match. The glory days are long gone for Toronto FC, and who knows when they'll be back, but Jonathan Osorio was at the forefront of it all. He comes in at #71.
